28th August 2011 Another day, another diet.

Excerpt from my diary:
Well, to be fair, an awful lot has happened since the last time I wrote in my diary or blogged and I'm only half a stone heavier than I was then.
Let's see, I met a wonderful man, had a baby and got married. I have had possibly THE worst two years of my entire career and am pretty chuffed that (a) I'm still sane and (b) 4 months after the baby arrived, I'm only half a stone heavier than I was before I was pregnant.

Today is the day I re-start the Dukan diet. I've tried it before and was quite sucessfull. It's hard to stay on it long term as it can be quite anti social, I suppose, but worth persevering with. I'm a type 2 diabetic and it worked wonders on controlling my blood glucose (BG) levels, which is why I'm trying it again. Throughout my pregnancy I was allowed to take insulin, so had amazing BG control and have been taken off it since - so my BGs were all over the place and I felt truly rotten. In fact, I contacted my nurse and literally BEGGED to be given something to help get them down normal levels for my wedding day.

I couldn't cut out carbs until I had done with breastfeeding and was back on more of an even keel in terms of sleepless nights, so waited and waited and waited to start Dukan. It turns out that some of the fatigue I felt was in fact due to postpartum cardio myopathy. A rare heart condition brought on by breastfeeding hormones. The consultant kept saying "recovering from" often and I knew that it must be something noteworthy. In it's worst case, women with PPCM can be given only 4-7 years to live so I am very lucky to be not one of those women!
Knowing that you've had such a lucky escape certainly does bring the reality of life and all it's trials sharply back into focus. SO time to seriously attack weight loss and getting BG sorted out.

My long term goals: get to HBA1c of 6% or less ( it was 7.8 last blood test, has been higher since) and lose 66kg. Yes, I really do need to lose that much weight to get to a healthy weight.

So I got onto the Dukan site and it tells me that I need to do 6 days on Attack phase. Today is Day 1.

Breafast: Scrambled egg with bacon (bacon is a cheat, using up what's left in the fridge...)
Lunch: Chicken and cottage cheese
Dinner: EPIC FAIL - Dinner at mum and dad's - Lamb with veg, roast potatoes and pudding, apple crumble with ice cream.

Not the most sucessful start.... I should have shared with them that I was dieting..
